This is the view from my office window that greeted me on Monday afternoon. The top of the silhouetted building (a close up of which you'll see on Monday), is I think, the old control tower for RAE in Farnoborough. I don't know what's in the main bulk of the building - I have heard that's where the old wind tunnels were, but I don't know for sure. I think it's a rather splendid building in its own way, albeit a bit boxy, but the view is obscured by a really ugly brick building with loads of pipes and chimneys that I was convinced was going to be pulled down last year. I took this on Monday of the store in Farnborough, the day before it closed. It's sad that such a well-established high street name has come to grief, but really the company has been an anachronism for a good few years. Steve

Have a great Christmas everyone. May all your special dreams come true. Wishing you also a happy, healthy and prosperous 2009. (Although given the current economic situation it looks like the latter of the three is not so likely. Still, the first two are more important). Steve.

Well that's enough of a trip down memory lane - the School Ties have been put back in the wardrobe. After seeing Xavi's (http://xavi.shutterchance.com/) excellent recent mini planets, I thought I'd have another go at one, having posted a couple about a year ago (http://steve.shutterchance.com/photoblog/My_Little_Planet_/). Having just returned from a weekend in Berlin, the Reichstag immediately sprang to mind. This is an extremely rare shot for me - after going digital several years ago, there aren't many pictures that are one-off's, and particularly those that involve using a tripod. However, having walked to the Reichstag with all my required equipment in my pockets - 2 lenses, mini tripod, remote control, spare CF cards etc, I discovered that I didn't have a spare battery, and the camera was already flashing a warning at me. Consequently, I set up and took exactly one shot, before heading off to take some other views. It was very cold, so whilst walking in between views, I put the battery in my pocket to warm up, and it still hadn't conked out by the time I got back to the hotel. This, along with most of the images in my archive are available on high quality 90x60cm stretched canvas for only GBP 99 including delivery to the UK and many other European countries. If you're interested, please use the 'contact' button. Keep snapping. Steve

...or "How I lost my head for heights" PIcture, if you will, an eleven-year-old boy arriving at school a few minutes late, hurrying up the steps to his form room for registration, holding on to the handrail. Just as he's going up the steep corner, where the handrail goes almost vertical, the form room disgorges its' contents and boys come charging down the stairs for assembly. The single boy going against the traffic holds on to the handrail with his right hand for dear life as he goes over the handrail, dangling over the abyss, but still clutching his briefcase in his left hand. That boy was me. I didn't fall -someone pulled me back. I can't remember who, nor who it was who (inadvertently) pushed me over. It might even be the same person. I'm not sure my legs went over, maybe it was only from the waist up. It's about a 10 metre drop to the concrete below. I can't actually remember whether or not I had a head for heights before this, but I know I didn't have one after!

What's all this 'school ties' stuff I've been going on about? Well, on November 15th, there was a bit of a reunion at my old school, featured here. About a dozen people from the class of 1978 met up, 30 years after leaving school. We had a tour which was very interesting, and it would have been good to spend more time chatting and pondering. That was the first time I had visited the School in 30 years. Despite what you see here, the school is straight, not curved, as are the steps. If I had a tilt-shift lens, perhaps I could have got it sorted, but this was a hand-held six shot panorama at 12mm, stitched using ptgui. I have done perspective correction, but I couldn't figure out the distortion correction in a reasonable timeframe. The School (Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) [link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Elizabeth%27s_Hospital ] sits imposingly on the side of Brandon Hill in Bristol, with the Cabot Tower [link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabot_Tower_(Bristol) ] behind. You can't see the tower in this photo, but you could in yesterday's. Before you ask - despite the name, it's not a hospital.

Anyone recognise this yet? Even if you don't know the building, you may know the tower in the left background, which I would have thought would be well-known in this part of the UK.
